New Ranking Indicates Emphasis on Locally and Globally-Relevant Research, World-Class Faculty Experts and Quality Education Ìý

Khalifa University has announced that it is top-ranked in the UAE and has remained among the top 10 out of 125 Arab institutions in the 2021 Times Higher Education (THE) Arab Universities Ranking that was announced at the THE Arab Universities Forum.

Khalifa University ranked sixth overall in the THE list that assessed universities from 14 Arab countries. The ranking is THE’s most comprehensive assessment of higher education in the Arab region to date.

The methodology behind the Arab ranking is based on the same framework as the global table, but some adjustments have been made and some new metrics have been included to reflect the features and missions of universities in the Arab region. There are regional measures on reputation and collaboration as well as metrics related to social impact.

The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: Teaching (the learning environment); Research (volume, income and reputation); Citations (research influence); International outlook (staff, students and research); and Industry income (knowledge transfer).

Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Executive Vice-President, Khalifa University of Science and Technology, said: “Our ranking in the latest 2021 Times Higher Education (THE) Arab Universities listings rankings once again establishes the emphasis we place on locally and globally-relevant research, world-class faculty experts and our quality of education. We believe this ranking will encourage us further to seek even greater heights in the future.â€

THE University Ranking Forum: Arab University Rankings 2021 also featured the launch of the inaugural THE Arab University Rankings. Leaders and managers from institutions across the Arab World convened for the one-day forum to reconsider performance and to examine how measuring university impact can provide a framework for building and enhancing reputation.

Khalifa University Ranks 214th Internationally in ‘Engineering and Technology’ in 2021 QS World University Rankings by Subject Leaping 67 Notches Ìý

Khalifa University has leapt 67 notches to be ranked 214th globally in the ‘Engineering and Technology’ category, top in the UAE and in six subjects in the most recent 2021 QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings by Subject.

The milestone achievement comes as Khalifa University has been ranked 21st in Petroleum Engineering internationally, a jump of seven notches, in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Executive Vice-President, Khalifa University, said: “The international acknowledgement of Khalifa University’s academic status through the 2021 QS World University Rankings by Subject further consolidates our status as a top-ranked institution renowned for world-class quality education. In a year beset with a global pandemic that brought major challenges to academic institutions, Khalifa University has again vindicated its primary status globally, regionally and in the UAE, because of our expert and dedicated faculty members and the level of research produced at the University. We believe this milestone recognition will motivate us even further to reach bigger heights in the coming years.â€Ìý

Khalifa University has also performed better in other subjects with Civil and Structural Engineering ranked within the top-200 band globally, while Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering coming among the ‘top-250 band’ in the 2021 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject is an extensive independent comparative analysis on the performance of 13,883 individual university programs, taken by students at 1,440 universities in 85 locations across the world, across 51 academic disciplines.Ìý

Four components – academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, and the H-index – are used to rank universities in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021. Apart from academic and employer reputation, the QS World University Rankings by Subject measures ‘citations per paper’ rather than ‘citations per faculty member’ for more reliability in statistics. The H-index is a way of measuring both the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar. It is based on the set of the academic’s most cited papers and the number of citations that they have received in other publications.Ìý

Khalifa University already ranks at #211 in the QS World University Rankings 2021, which features 1,029 of the most prestigious universities in the world.

Khalifa University has announced it is ranked first in the UAE by two international university rankings – the 2021 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject: Engineering and Technology, and the US News & World Report’s 2021 edition of the Best Global Universities ranking.

Khalifa University was also placed among the Top 200 in Engineering (within the 176–200 band) out of nearly 1,000 universities assessed in the THE World University Rankings by Subject: Engineering and Technology, while the US News & World Report’s 2021 edition of the Best Global Universities ranking placed the university among the Top 200 (144th) in Asia, out of nearly 1,500 universities spread across 86 countries globally. This also puts Khalifa University ahead of any other university in the UAE in this ranking by about 200 places.

The US News & World Report’s ranking is based on ‘Web of Science’ data and InCites metrics provided by Clarivate, a global leader in providing trusted information and insights to accelerate the pace of innovation. The Best Global Universities methodology also weighs factors that measure a university’s global and regional research reputation and academic research performance.

In addition to the criteria of the minimum threshold of at least 1,250 papers published from 2014 to 2018, the US News & World Report’s ranking also used 13 indicators and weights to measure global research performance.Ìý

The ‘THE World University Rankings 2021 by Subject: Engineering and Technology’ includes a range of subject areas covering Chemical Engineering, General Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Civil Engineering.

The subject tables employ the same range of 13 performance indicators used in the overall World University Rankings 2020, brought together with scores provided under five categories. However, the overall methodology is recalibrated for each subject, with the weightings changed to suit the individual fields.
