Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry

Dr. Mohammad Abu Haija completed his Ph.D. in 2006 at the Technical University of Berlin in cooperation with Fritz-Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, Germany. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory, USA. Following that role, he worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry at the King Khalid University, Saudi Arabia.

In 2012 Dr. Mohammad joined The Petroleum Institute, which became part of Khalifa University in 2017. His research interests include catalysis, carbon-based materials, wastewater treatment, synthesis and characterization of nano-materials. He currently oversees the MSc in Applied Chemistry program.

Research Interests

Research interests include catalysis, oxides and carbon-based materials, wastewater treatment, gas sensors, synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials.

  • Optimization of hybrid oil refinery wastewater treatment processes including advanced oxidation processes, adsorption, and nanofiltration
  • Preparation and characterization of oxide nanoparticles for gas sensing applications
  • Development of ferrite catalysts for the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater
  • Materials and surface science
