Biography

Dr Yu is Professor and Chair in the Department of Aerospace Engineering Khalifa University of Science and Technology, UAE since February 2024.

Professor Yu holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons), Associateship of the City and Guilds of London Institute (1987), Doctor of Philosophy and Diploma of Imperial College (1991) from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine UK. 

His PhD studies were under the supervision of the late Professor J.H. Whitelaw (FRS FREng) and were sponsored by the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Pyestock (UK).

Prior to joining KU, he was with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (2018 – 2024). He was the Head of the Interdiscipinary Division for Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering from Aug 2018 to Nov 2019, and subsequently, the Head of Training for FTO@PolyU and the Training Manager for HKAR-147@PolyU from 2019 to January 2024.

He was with the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) (1991 to 2013) and Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT)(2013 – 2018) where he held various administrative positions including (1) Head, Division of Aerospace Engineering in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, (2) Director, Master of Science Programme in Aerospace Engineering with the Technical University of Munich, Germany, (3) Vice-Dean, Office of ²ÝÝ®ÊÓÆµ, (4) Member of the University Council (now Board of Trustee), (5) Principal Staff Officer, President’s Office, (6) Director, Part-time Master of Science Programme in Biomedical Engineering with the Singapore General Hospital and (7) Programme Director, Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering (Land & Building Services).

During his tenure as Head of Aerospace Engineering at NTU in particular, he had 
successfully obtained SGD 50 million grant from CAAS to establish the Air Traffic Management Research Institute (ATMRI). He also helped to establish the LTA Research Centre for Railway Engineering at SIT.

Professor Yu was also an Adjunct Professor to the Department of Architecture and Building Sciences at the Xi’an JiaoTong University, China (2015-2018), a Visiting Scientist to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Tokyo, Japan (2007) and the Institute of Fluid Mechanics at the University of Erlangen, Germany (1999).

Additional Info

Research

Professor Yu’s research interest is on non-intrusive measurement techniques for 
fluid flow such as, Laser-Doppler Anemometry, Phase-Doppler Anemometry, 
Particle Image Velocimetry and Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence, and their 
applications to aerodynamics, propulsion, turbulent mixing flows, biofluid 
mechanics, environmental fluid mechanics and fundamental plume and jet studies. 
He has published more than 240 papers in archive journals and conferences. 21 PhD 
students and 12 MEng students have been graduated successfully under his sole and 
joint supervision. He is supervising 2 PhD students rightnow (at HKPolyU and KU).
He is currently working on research projects in fundamental fluid mechanics and 
indoor air quality with his colleagues at Sichuan University, PRC (Dr. Gao Lei), 
Beijing Institute of Technology, PRC (Dr. Zheng Guoqing) and Singapore Institute 
of Technology, Singapore (Dr. An Hui).

He is ranked among the top 2% of the researchers in the category of mechanical 
engineering and transportation since 2019.

 

Industrial ties, Entrepreneurship and Professional society memberships,

Professor Yu is a trainer for Holistic Gas Turbine for Rolls Royce Aeroengine in 
Singapore since 2009. He had trained engineers from Singapore, HK, China and 
Japan.

He was one of the Independent Non-Executive Directors of SBS Transit Ltd (2018 
– 2024). He was also the Chairman of the Service Quality Committee. 

He was one of the co-founders of the high-tech start-up company: E-mobility 
Technology Company Ltd (2022 – 2024) during his tenure at the Hong Kong 
Polytechnic University.

He is a Chartered Engineer (UK), Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers 
(UK), Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (UK), Fellow of The Hong Kong 
Institution of Engineers, Chartered Engineer in Transportation and Fellow of the 
Institution of Engineers, Singapore. He was a member of the IES Council (2018 -
2020) and is an independent assessor for Chartered Engineer status for various 
organizations.
