Overview

The Research Operations Department at Khalifa University supports the full lifecycle of research activities, from securing funding to ensuring compliance for successful project execution. The department manages pre- and post-award processes, sponsored research agreements, non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), and joint collaborations and provides ethical oversight through formal review processes, including the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for human subjects’ research and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) for animal research. It also oversees research policy development.

Core responsibilities include administering internal and external funding cycles, negotiating and executing research agreements, mitigating research-related, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards such as IRB, IACUC, biosafety, and export control. The department also contributes to strategic resource planning, including budgeting and staffing. By promoting a culture of operational excellence, transparency, and compliance, the department enables high-impact research that advances Khalifa University’s strategic R&D objectives.

Pre-Award Unit

The Pre-Award Unit supports the development and submission of research proposals. The team ensures timely, accurate, and compliant submissions, facilitates collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, and reviews research agreements before legal processing. In addition, the Unit also helps identify and secure external funding opportunities.

Key responsibilities include:

Post-Award Unit

The Post-Award Unit manages the implementation and financial oversight of funded research projects. The team ensures compliance with sponsor and institutional requirements and supports researchers throughout the life of their projects.

Research Compliance

The Research Compliance Unit ensures that all research at Khalifa University comply with ethical and regulatory standards. It develops research related institutional policies, offers training, and monitors research activities to safeguard integrity and accountability. Ethical oversight is provided through formal review processes, including the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for human subjects’ research and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) for animal research.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop and update policies in line with national and international regulations
  • Oversee compliance in key areas such as research involving human subjects, animal welfare, biosafety, conflict of interest, and export control
  • Training for faculty, staff, and students
  • Prepare compliance and risk reports
