Research under Sustainable Planning And Smart Cities focuses on the planning, design, analysis, and construction management of infrastructure systems crucial to the economic viability of UAE.
Research projects covers construction planning and intelligent management of buildings, transportation networks, and public works, such as roads, bridges, and airport. Urban planning ensures that infrastructure projects consider aspects of resilience and sustainability. Leveraging the wealth of local civil engineering and construction activities, and the transportation sector ensures relevance and immediate use of research results.

Rethinking Suburbs: Morphological and Network Analysis Review
The research aims to provide an insight into the neighborhood design, efficiency, and sustainable development strategies of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
The key objectives of the research are:
- Investigating the changes in the physical form and structure of neighborhoods over time.
- Assessing the design of neighborhood street networks for their efficiency and impact on urban connectivity, both locally and city-wide.
- Exploring how neighborhoods can be designed to encourage walking as a practical mode of transportation

Rethinking Urban Sustainability in the GCC: Translating Plans into Practices
This research aims to enhance KU’s contribution to the region as a key partner in developing sustainable urban strategies for the nation’s future development.
The key objectives of the research are to:
- Assist public agencies in the GCC region in understanding the urban form of neighborhoods landscapes progress over time.
- Document the transformation of urban form in the GCC region.
- Explore which urban forms of neighborhoods have more sustainable forms, thus encouraged in future planning.
- Provide a critical study on which urban forms and policies should be revisited, which ones to further adopt in the future, and which ones to reassess and drop.
